The verbal suffix –ke in Warihío and its relation with voice

Warihío is a Uto-Aztecan language from the Sonoran branch. The verbal suffix    –ke occurs in three phenomena: benefactive, external possession, and ethical dative. Accounting for this suffix in terms of valence increase device (Dixon and Aikhenvald, 2000), a ‘licenser’ of an ¨extra¨ argument (Baker, 1988), or by the Relational Grammar Relational Succession Law (Perlmutter and Postal, 1983) do not tell us much about the functional differences and similarities between these seemingly bound phenomena. In contrast, following the ‘give’ schema proposed by Shibatani (1996) to account for benefactive constructions; the ‘relevance’ feature on external possession (Payne and Barshi, 1999) ‘ethical dative’ constructions (Shibatani 1994), and functional conceptualization of voice (Shibatani in preparation) as ¨grammatical reflections of the different evolutionary phases of an action¨, allow us to gather in a same functional domain these related but different phenomena, where the presence of the verbal suffix     –ke is key on showing the relevant meaning:

 (3)        no'ó     newí-ke-re          maritsa                                   Ethical dative
