The SILS conferences on revitalizing and teaching indigenous languages have been held annually since 1994, and this is the first time for it to be hosted by UNM. Past symposiums have featured a wide range of presentations, from raising awareness of the value of native languages, to developing and implementing community-based language maintenance, revitalization, and teaching programs, to developing indigenous language textbooks useful for children, and even to developing smart-phone applications in indigenous languages. The theme of this year's conference is "Language and Community: Building Collaboration in Revitalization Work."
